Chapter 28: I’m Right Here

Three days later, Joe returned to Wilshire Lane, eager to check the Pratts’ house and the Nielsens’ lawn. Wearing all black and under the cover of darkness, he cut through the construction site. BK was at the stone cabin. After the debacle with Stacy, Joe had decided it was best to leave her at home.

Joe crept behind the Pratts’ mansion. Lights were on throughout the house. Windows were open. The hum of industrial fans came from the house. They won’t be able to get rid of the mold. They’ll have to strip that house to the bones.

Joe snuck along the Pratts’ privacy fence to the corner to check the Nielsens’ house next door. The landscape lighting revealed a straw-brown lawn, dead flowers, and hedges burned black by the poison. Joe smirked to himself.

Then, he spotted a police car parked along Wilshire Lane, between the two McMansions. He moved back behind the privacy fence, sitting and hiding between the fence and the arborvitae hedge.
